From the start of 2007, the school was divided into eight Houses of approximately equal numbers. Each has a Head of House, who performs a role similar to that of a Year Level Coordinator of previous years. Houses are further divided into Mentor Groups, with a specific teacher Mentor.
In Year 7 & 8 each of the four Neighbourhoods is recognised as a separate learning community in which each student is well known by staff and students. Each neighbourhood is divided into eight Mentor groups each with a link to particular House which the student will remain part of for their time at the College.
In Year 9 students move into a vertically based Mentor group which is still part of the same House that they started with in Year 7. The Mentor group comprises 3 or 4 students from each year level from 9-12 and cared for by a staff member who will remain attached to the same group each year. The Mentor is the primary contact between the school and home, and will be involved in monitoring all aspects of the student’s progress in their last four years of schooling.
As students move from Year 9 to 12 they will be expected to take on a greater leadership role within the group by acting as a positive role model, looking after younger students and participating in and occasionally leading the weekly discussion and activity sessions. Where the seriousness of an incident, either disciplinary or welfare, goes beyond the expertise or authority of the Mentor the matter is passed to the Head of House for further action, but the Mentor will be kept informed.
The House and Mentor system provides a unique opportunity for students to engage with the broader aspects of school life, form important and lifelong relationships with others and experience a wide range of leadership opportunities.
