The textbook used by students at Gisborne Secondary College is:  Science Quest Book 3 by Lofts and Evergreen.

YEAR 9 CURRICULUM FOR THE YEAR 2000

CHAPTER 1    IN THE SHOES OF THE FISHERMAN AND FORENSIC SCIENCE
Introduces the scientific approach to problem saving, correct experimental proceedures are backed up in the forensic science unit.
 CHAPTER 3    CHEMICAL ENERGY
Introduces endothermic and exothermic reactions, would link well with Chapter 6 and the ASEP  Petroleum Unit. In addieion look at different kinds of energy. e.g. potential and kinetic energy. etc.
CHAPTER 5    KEEPING AN EYE ON LIGHT
Looks at light waves, transparent vs opaque light. Refraction, Reflection, lenses, etc.
CHAPTER 6    BENEATH THE SURFACE AND  THE A.S.E.P. PETROLEUM UNIT
Riches below the Earth's surface. Links well with Ch3. N.B. We agreed to put the metals unit into the year 10 course. Petroleum unit provides practical experiments, e.g.Coal could/should be included.
CHAPTER 7    FOLLOWING ORDERS AND SUPPLIMENTARY TOPIC  ON  NERVOUS AND
                          HORMONAL  CO-ORDINATION
This would link well with Chapter 8, please consider including blood circulation here as it links with cellular respiration and the ability to maintain and co-ordinate the body systems.
CHAPTER 8    THE ENERGY OF LIFE
Energy from food and chemicals, photosynthesis transforming light energy, cellular respiration, the energy flow through the food chain/webs. External respiration should be considered too as without oxygen cellular respiration isn't efficient.
